Golar LNG Seizes Opportunity with FLNG Converted from Ageing LNG Carriers; Signs Two Major Contracts in Argentina Worth $13.7 Billion

Golar LNG, a company specialising in the operation of FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) units, is capitalising on the business of converting ageing LNG carriers into FLNG vessels. On 2 May 2025, the company announced it had signed two 20-year contracts for one of the world’s largest FLNG development projects in Argentina, with an annual production capacity of 5.95 million tonnes, scheduled to commence operations between 2027 and 2028.

Coinciding with this announcement, Golar LNG’s Technical Manager reported on LinkedIn about the modification and cutting works of Fuji LNG, part of Golar LNG’s MkII project at Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. Golar LNG is firmly securing business opportunities by repurposing old LNG carriers as FLNG units.

FLNG（Floating Liquified Natural Gas）の運用を専門とするGolar LNGが旧型のLNG船を改造、FLNGに転用するビジネスが商機を得ている。同社は2025年5月2日、2027年から2028年に次々に稼働するアルゼンチンで年産595万トンの世界最大級のFLNG開発プロジェクトに関する2件の20年契約を締結したと発表した。

折しも同日、Golar LNGのテクニカル・マネージャーがLinkedInでYantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd.でのGolar LNGのMkIIプロジェクトに投入されるFuji LNGの改良・切断工事の様子を報告。Golar LNGは旧型LNG船を改造したFLNGビジネスで商機を確保している状況だ。
