〆Nereus Digital Bunkers Introduces SaaS to Bunkering Operations, Enhances Fuel Procurement Speed by 60%

Greek start-up Nereus Digital Bunkers is pushing ahead with the digitalisation of marine fuel procurement. By introducing SaaS (Software as a Service) into the traditionally paper- and phone-based bunkering business, the company has significantly improved operational efficiency.

Procurement speed has increased by 60% compared to conventional methods, while workload has been reduced by 80%. This innovative digital transformation has been adopted by leading Greek shipowners and ship management firms including Latsco Shipping, Modion Maritime and Arcadia Ship Management.

In a move to expand its global reach, Nereus Digital Bunkers will host a webinar in late-May to early in June aimed at the Japanese, Singaporean, and global markets. CEO and founder Nikolas Gkikas spoke to us about the services offered by the company and its future business strategy.

　Nereus Digital Bunkersは販路拡大に向け、5月下旬から６月上旬に日本やシンガポール、全世界向けにウェビナーを開催する予定だ。創業者であるNikolas Gkikas CEOに、Nereus Digital Bunkersが顧客にもたらすサービス内容と今後の事業戦略を聞いた。

— To begin with, could you explain the background and motivation behind founding Nereus Digital Bunkers?
“My journey to founding Nereus Digital Bunkers is rooted in hands-on experience within the maritime industry. I have previously worked as a bunkering purchaser and port agent in Los Angeles, and as a bunker broker in both Connecticut and Greece. These varied roles highlighted to me the inefficiencies plaguing the bunkering sector. In early 2019, driven by a vision to digitally transform marine fuel procurement, I established Nereus Digital Bunkers.”

— Nereus Digital Bunkers has implemented SaaS in bunkering operations. As a cloud-based service accessed via the internet, how is your company making use of SaaS?
“Our proprietary SaaS platform has fundamentally overhauled traditional bunkering processes. By digitising the entire procurement cycle, we have reduced workload by 80% and improved procurement speed by 60%. The platform integrates market research covering over 200 ports, optimisation tools, and automated documentation features. Notably, it enables 5–10% savings in fuel costs through real-time budget tracking and seamless integration of vendor quotations.”

— What do you consider to be the most distinctive strengths of your digital system?
“The key feature of our platform lies in its creation of an intelligent ecosystem that goes far beyond mere digital paperwork. It combines market intelligence, optimisation algorithms, and automated workflows into a unified system. This comprehensive approach, paired with deep industry expertise, has delivered dramatic improvements in workload reduction, cost savings, and operational efficiency.”

— Nereus Digital Bunkers has identified Asia, particularly Japan and Singapore, as key markets for future growth.
“We see tremendous potential in advanced markets like Singapore and Japan. These regions place a strong emphasis on precision and efficiency—attributes closely aligned with our platform’s strengths. Features such as real-time budget control and advanced procurement analytics directly address the needs of high-frequency trading environments.”

“Our system reduces procurement time by 60% and enables fuel procurement at optimal pricing. In the context of Singapore’s aim to fully implement digital bunkering by 2025, the system is expected to alleviate the workload equivalent to 40,000 people—this is where its true value lies.”

— Can you tell us about the companies Nereus Digital Bunkers has worked with so far?

— What kind of company do you envision Nereus Digital Bunkers becoming in the future?

He graduated from University BCA-Athens and London Metropolitan University. After completing an internship and working as an assistant in operations at Samos Steamship, he gained further experience in the bunker industry through roles at General Steamship as a Port Agent, LQM as a Bunker Broker, and Shipoil as a Bunker Trader. He went on to found Nereus Digital Bunkers. He is currently 39 years old.

――最初に、Nereus Digital Bunkersを創業した背景ときっかけについて聞きたい。

　「Nereus Digital Bunkersを創業するに至った私の道のりは、海事業界での実務経験に基づいている。これまでロサンゼルスではバンカリングの購買担当者およびポートエージェント、コネチカット州とギリシャではバンカーブローカーとして勤務してきた。こうした多様な現場経験を通じて、バンカリング業界に蔓延する非効率性を痛感した。2019年初頭、海上燃料調達をデジタルで変革するというビジョンのもと、Nereus Digital Bunkersを設立した」

――Nereus Digital Bunkersはバンカリング業務にSaaSを導入した。SaaS（Software as a Service）は、一般的にインターネット経由でソフトウェアを利用できるクラウド型のサービスである。御社はSaaSをどのように活用しているのか。

　「当社独自のSaaSプラットフォームによって、従来のバンカリング業務を根本から変革した。調達サイクル全体をデジタル化することで、作業負荷を80％削減し、調達スピードを60％向上させている。プラットフォームは、200以上の港を対象とした市場調査、最適化ツール、自動書類作成機能を統合している。特筆すべきは、リアルタイムの予算管理機能やベンダーからの見積もりの自動連携を通じて、燃料コストを5～10％削減できる点にある」
