As Japanese trading houses and German shipowners quietly explore joint ventures through co-investment schemes, an upcoming seminar in Tokyo will offer practical insights into navigating the differences in business cultures and regulatory systems between the two nations.
Scheduled for Thursday, 27 June, the event will take place at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Roppongi.

Hosted by the international law firm Clyde & Co, Berenberg Bank, and mgm technology partners, the seminar is titled: “Japanese Financiers, Insurers, Trading Houses and Investors: Doing Business with German Companies – Hamburg as a Perfect Hub.” It will provide detailed legal and financial guidance necessary for structuring and managing joint ventures, while delving into collaboration opportunities and challenges in the maritime, energy, and finance sectors between Japan and Germany.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Andreas Dressel, Senator for Finance of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, who will highlight Hamburg’s role as an international hub and outline areas of interest from the perspective of German companies.
Following this, Mr Clemens Dr. Hillmer (LL.M. (UCT)), a lawyer at Clyde & Co, will examine key legal considerations in Japan–Germany joint venture agreements.

A panel discussion featuring industry representatives from Berenberg, mgm technology partners, and other stakeholders will further explore real-world case studies and approaches to risk management.
The seminar will conclude with a breakfast networking session to foster further connections.
