Japan Mulls Creation of Japan-US Shipbuilding Revitalisation Fund — Countering Chinese Shipbuilding, Promoting Cooperation with US Yards

The Japanese government has resolved to provide state-led support for the domestic shipbuilding industry, it emerged by 23 May. Until now, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) had prioritised support for shipbuilding from a regional employment standpoint. However, in the context of Japan-US tariff negotiations, Japanese shipbuilding has surfaced as a “bargaining chip” to counter China’s shipbuilding dominance. When approached by Maritime Bridge Japan at 8:45 a.m. on 23 May, MLIT declined to comment on details, stating that it was “not in a position to answer” and added that it was “not aware” of the proposed fund.
