Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Signals Readiness for US-Japan Shipbuilding Cooperation, With Nagasaki Shipyard as Key Hub

On the 28th, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) held a briefing to report on the progress of its medium-term business plan. The plan identifies the defence sector as a core area for growth. When asked by reporters about Japan’s potential shipbuilding cooperation with the United States—currently a focal point in ongoing tariff negotiations between the two nations—President Eisaku Ito stated, “There has not yet been any concrete content or request [from the government], but if such a request were to come, we would make every possible effort.”

MHI, through its subsidiary Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, has an extensive track record in building and repairing defence-related vessels, centred around its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works, particularly the Tategami Plant. In 2022, MHI sold its Koyagi Shipyard—Japan’s largest yard—to Oshima Shipbuilding. The Koyagi facility is now focused on commercial shipbuilding, and it remains uncertain whether it will engage in naval vessel repairs under any new cooperation framework.

三菱重工業は28日、中期経営計画の進捗説明会を開いた。中計では防衛事業を成長分野に位置づけている。現在、日米の関税交渉の焦点の一つとなっている米国への日本の造船協力についての記者からの質問に対し、伊藤栄作社長は「まだ具体的な内容や要請が（政府から）来ていない段階だが、仮にそのような要請があれば最大限努力する」と語った。

三菱重工業は子会社の三菱造船が長崎造船所（Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works、立神地区、Tategami Plantの本工場）を中心に、防衛関連船舶の建造や修繕で豊富な実績を持っている。同社は2022年に国内最大のヤードである香焼工場（Koyagi Shipyard）を大島造船所に売却した。現在、香焼工場は民間商船建造に集中しており、艦艇の修繕事業で連携するかは未知数だ。
