Under the slogan “Trade Smarter,” MarineTraffic, an intelligence tool for the maritime industry that visualises the seaborne supply chain, has launched a new feature called “Container Terminal Congestion.”

This new function enables users to monitor congestion and delays in real time at the terminal level rather than by port, leveraging AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and information from over 170 carriers. Now part of Kpler, the company is strengthening its presence as a maritime DX platform serving a wide range of industries, from trading companies to logistics departments.

Terminal-Level Congestion Visualisation Enables Accurate Delay Tracking

The newly introduced “Container Terminal Congestion” feature from MarineTraffic goes a step beyond traditional port-level data, allowing for terminal-specific monitoring of congestion, berthing queues, and schedule forecasting. Based on detailed AIS network location data and scheduling, it offers advanced visualisation and decision-support functions, including:

• Visualisation of vessels at anchor, berthed ships, congestion status, and historical, current, and projected terminal call schedules

• A list of vessels scheduled to arrive over the next six weeks, including partner vessels under Joint Operating Agreements (JOA) or space charter agreements

• Monitoring of berthing priority and estimated time of arrival for a company’s own fleet

• Route optimisation through redirection to less congested terminals

• Verification of demurrage claims using accurate AIS data

• Benchmarking and optimisation of performance at each terminal

• Live monitoring of vessel positions at terminals worldwide, including anchorage zones and offshore waiting areas

With these capabilities, logistics departments and freight forwarders can identify delay risks in advance and respond swiftly and proactively.

MarineTraffic and Kpler: Integrating Data for Both Precision and Depth

Founded in Greece in 2007, MarineTraffic has grown into one of the world’s largest AIS visualisation platforms, attracting millions of monthly users.
