Japanese shipping majors have confirmed that several of their tankers operating near the Strait of Hormuz were affected by GPS jamming—an act of deliberately disrupting signals from the Global Positioning System—according to an investigation by Maritime Bridge Japan (MBJ). → According to officials from multiple shipping companies, incidents of GPS jamming have been reported involving VLCCs, LNG tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz since the U.S. airstrike on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 23.

→ While none of the incidents resulted in accidents, one senior official told MBJ: “There were multiple confirmed cases where the vessel’s location reported by the captain was completely different from the position monitored from shore.
