Ehime Bank and JFC Provide Joint Support for Coastal Tanker

Equity-Based Loan to Back Ootaka Kaiun’s Island Logistics and Seafarer Retention
Ehime Bank and the Matsuyama branch of the Japan Finance Corporation (JFC) announced on 2 October that they had executed a syndicated loan to support the purchase of a second-hand white oil tanker (749GT) by coastal shipping company Ootaka Kaiun (based in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture; President Nobutaka Oouchi).
Key Points of the Article
→ Although the loan amount has not been disclosed, the “Private Sector Collaboration Support-Type Equity Loan” utilised by Ootaka Kaiun features a subordinated structure that allows repayment to be deferred, enabling it to be recognised as the shipowner’s equity capital.
→ With growing concerns over the declining number of operators responsible for petroleum transport to remote islands due to the ageing of seafarers and a shortage of successors, the initiative is attracting attention as a notable example of regional finance and public institutions working in unison.
