The shipping and steel manufacturing industries still retain a strong image of being a “man’s world.”
Noriko Miyamoto, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at NS United Kaiun Kaisha, joined NYK in 1983 as a clerical employee. After taking the internal test for semi-managerial positions at NYK in 1989, she has lived her career in what she describes as a “man’s world.” She later moved to NS United Kaiun Kaisha, where she currently oversees the General Administration Group and the Corporate Planning Group. Having spent most of her professional life in an environment overwhelmingly dominated by men, Miyamoto says, “Although I have occasionally felt gender differences even while working in a supportive environment, I have never had a sense of being discriminated against.”

海運、鉄鋼メーカー業界は「男の世界」のイメージが未だ色濃く残る。
NSユナイテッド海運の宮本教子取締役・専務執行役員は、日本郵船に1983年に一般職として入社、その後、89年に日本郵船の準総合職の内部試験を受けて以来、「男の世界」で生きてきた。その後、NSユナイテッド海運に転じ、現在は総務グループ・企画グループを管掌する。会社人生の大半を男性が多数を占める世界で過ごした宮本専務だが、「理解のある職場に勤務し女性という性差を感じたことはあっても、差別されたという意識はない」と話す。
