According to the Turkish Coast Guard, the Palau-flagged Suezmax crude oil tanker Elbus, which had been sailing toward Russia, came under attack by an unmanned surface vessel (USV) on January 8 off the Turkish coast in the Black Sea.

Key points of the article

→ The vessel is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet”, used to transport Russian crude oil while circumventing Western sanctions. Its operating practices, including the disabling of AIS and insufficient insurance arrangements, have previously been highlighted.

→ Since last year, attacks using unmanned surface vessels have increasingly targeted not only naval vessels but also economic infrastructure supporting crude oil exports in the Black Sea. 　トルコ沿岸警備隊によると、ロシア向けに航行していたパラオ船籍のスエズマックス型原油タンカー「Elbus」が1月8日、黒海のトルコ沖で無人水上艇（USV）による攻撃を受けた。

この記事のポイント

→同船は、西側制裁を回避してロシア産原油を輸送する「シャドーフリート」の一部とみられる。AIS停止や保険未整備といった運航慣行が指摘されてきた。
