“Japanese-related ships cannot leave the Persian Gulf even if they want to” — the dilemma

「日本関係船、ペルシャ湾を出たくても出られない」ジレンマ

In the morning of March 11 Japan time, a Japanese shipowner who has a bulk carrier waiting in the innermost part of the Persian Gulf responded to an interview.

The Japanese shipowner said:

“We are in regular contact with the vessel every day at 1 p.m. through the ship management company. The vessel is scheduled to depart on the 12th once cargo operations are completed at a certain port. For the time being we have no choice but to remain inside the Persian Gulf, and we are in a situation where we want to leave but cannot.”

The tone of the Japanese shipowner remains calm, but the words that naturally come out reflect anxiety: “the safety of the crew”, “a nearby chemical tanker was struck from the vessel’s vicinity”, and “we are considering how we should respond from here”.

■The whereabouts of 44 Japanese-related vessels

According to the Japan Shipowners’ Association, as of March 4, 2026, there were 44 Japanese-related vessels in the Persian Gulf west of the Strait of Hormuz.

Of these, four vessels carry 24 Japanese crew members.

The Japanese-related vessels include LNG carriers, crude oil tankers, car carriers, and bulk carriers owned by major shipping companies and Japanese shipowners.

「日本関係船、ペルシャ湾を出たくても出られない」ジレンマ

　3月11日日本時間午前、ペルシャ湾の奥部にバルクキャリアを待機させている日本船主が取材に応じた。

　日本船主が語る。

　「船舶管理会社を通じ、本船とは毎日午後1時に定時連絡を取っている。ある港で荷役を終え次第、12日に出港予定だ。当面、ペルシャ湾内に待機するしかなく、出たくても出られない状況だ」

　日本船主の声はあくまで冷静だが、自然と口から出る単語は、「船員の安全」「本船から付近のケミカルタンカーが被弾した」「今後の対応をどうすべきか検討中」といった不安を示すものばかりだ。

■日本関係船44隻の行方

　日本船主協会が2026年3月4日時点で確認したホルムズ海峡以西のペルシャ湾内にいる日本関係船は44隻。このうち4隻には日本人船員24人が乗船している。

　日本関係船には、海運大手や日本の船主が保有するLNG船、原油タンカー、自動車船、ばら積み貨物船などが含まれている。
