Taiwanese authorities are stepping up their vigilance after China deployed more than 100 naval vessels, China Coast Guard ships and special-purpose vessels across waters stretching from the Yellow Sea to the East China Sea, around Taiwan, the South China Sea and the western Pacific.

Chinese naval and coast guard activities have also sharply increased around the Taiwan Strait and the Bashi Channel, key arteries for Japan-bound energy shipments and container logistics.

Within the shipping industry, concern is gradually mounting over what some market participants describe as an “East Asian version of the Hormuz crisis”.
