Feature: When to Consider Reviewing Your Ship Management Company

Vessel operation is a critical factor determining the safety, efficiency, and profitability of maritime transport. However, a ship management company that has been entrusted with your vessels for many years may not always be providing optimal management. The following points are signs that shipowners and operators should consider as indicators for reviewing their ship management arrangements:

Failure to maintain operational systems (such as OpenX) in accordance with the budget

If the management company does not maintain and operate essential systems in line with the proposed budget, operational efficiency and safety management standards will decline. Such situations will also have a negative impact on long-term profitability.

Increase in non-budget expenses and waste on unnecessary services

When costs not included in the original contractual plan occur frequently and such expenditure does not contribute to operational or safety improvements, the financial burden falls back on the shipowner.

Low cost-effectiveness in vessel management

If high-quality management is not being carried out at an appropriate cost, and efficiency or cost savings in repairs and maintenance are not achieved, competitiveness may be undermined.

Deployment of inexperienced and incompetent crew

The experience and skill of crew members form the foundation of safe operations. Inappropriate crew assignments increase the risk of accidents and commercial losses.

Failure to adopt and implement the latest IMO regulations

When there is a delay in complying with the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, resulting in significant fines or commercial losses, shortcomings in the management system are evident.

Insufficient support in commercial matters and cargo handling

Where crew or management departments fail to provide support in cargo fixture negotiations or commercial matters, leading to losses for shipowners and charterers, this is a serious warning sign.

Safety score or DOC score below required standards

If the vessel’s safety evaluation or Document of Compliance (DOC) score falls below the required level, it risks losing the trust of business partners.

Frequent incidents

Even small-scale problems, if occurring often, raise concerns over the quality of management and the absence of preventive measures.

Inefficient response to breakdowns and repairs

When no prompt and economical repair or alternative solution is provided in the event of a breakdown, both downtime and costs will increase.

Lack of transparency

If the management company fails to report and share information, neglecting its accountability to the shipowner, the relationship of trust will be severely damaged.

Established in Singapore in 2024, Bilander Ship Management has rapidly increased its presence in the international ship management market. 船舶運航は、海上輸送の安全性・効率性・収益性を左右する重要な要素です。しかし、長年委託している船舶管理会社が常に最適な運営を行っているとは限りません。以下に挙げる項目は、船主・オペレーターの皆様が船舶管理の変更を検討すべきサインです。

1. 運航システム（OpenX等）の維持管理が予算通りに行われていない

管理会社が予算提案に沿って必要なシステムを維持・運用しない場合、運航効率や安全管理体制が低下します。こうした状況は、長期的な収益性にも悪影響を及ぼします。

2. 予算外支出の増加と不要サービスへの浪費

契約時の計画にない費用が頻発し、その支出が運航や安全性の向上につながっていない場合、財務負担は船主側に跳ね返ります。

3. 費用対効果の低い運航管理

6. 商業案件や貨物取扱いでのサポート不足

貨物契約（フィクスチャー）や商業案件で乗組員や管理部門の支援が欠け、船主・用船者に損害を与えるケースは重大な警告信号です。

7. 安全スコアやDOCスコアが基準未達

船舶の安全性評価や文書適合証明（DOC）のスコアが必要水準を下回れば、取引先からの信頼を失いかねません。

8. 事故の頻発

小規模なトラブルであっても発生頻度が高ければ、管理の質や予防策の欠如が疑われます。

9. 故障・修理対応の非効率性

故障時に迅速かつ経済的な修理・代替策が提示されない場合、ダウンタイムとコストの双方が拡大します。

10. 透明性の欠如

管理会社が報告・情報共有を怠り、船主への説明責任を果たさない場合、信頼関係は大きく損なわれます。
