On January 1, Yuto Suga, Chairman of the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), released his New Year’s message. In it, Chairman Suga reaffirmed the organisation’s founding principle of “earning the greatest trust through the highest quality of service”.

Key points of this article

→ For ClassNK, 2025 was also the year in which it moved into full-scale operation of its certification business for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a decarbonised fuel for the aviation sector, following approval from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The accumulation of certification achievements beyond the maritime field serves as a bridge towards future certification of marine fuels and the design of new regulatory frameworks.

→ As it enters 2026, ClassNK is positioned to play a role in supporting the industry from both technological and institutional perspectives amid a dual layer of uncertainty: the stagnation of discussions at the IMO over a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the advance implementation of regional regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) and FuelEU Maritime.

　日本海事協会（ClassNK）の菅勇人会長は1月1日、新年メッセージを発表した。その中で、菅勇人（Yuto Suga）会長は「最高のサービスで最大の信頼を得る」という原点を改めて強調した。

この記事のポイント

→ClassNKにとって2025年は、国際民間航空機関（ICAO）から承認を得ていた航空分野向け脱炭素燃料（SAF）認証事業を本格運用に移した年でもあった。ClassNKの海事分野にとどまらない認証実績の蓄積は、将来の舶用燃料認証や新制度設計への橋渡しとなる。

→2026年を迎えClassNKは、IMOでの温室効果ガス削減枠組みを巡る議論の停滞と、EU-ETSやFuelEU Maritimeといった地域規制の先行実施という二重の不確実性の中で、技術・制度の両面から業界を支える役割を担う。
