As cooperation between Japan and the United States in the shipbuilding sector draws increasing attention, focus is turning to the construction of icebreakers by Japan Marine United (JMU), a shipbuilder in which Imabari Shipbuilding announced on June 26, 2025, that it would raise its ownership stake to 60 percent. At present, JMU is the only company in Japan capable of building icebreakers.

A government official speaking to MBJ stated, “The Japanese government perceives risks in Russia’s monopoly over nuclear-powered icebreakers operating in the Arctic Ocean, and we are constantly updating our intelligence. 日本とアメリカの造船協力が注目される中、ジャパンマリンユナイテッド（ＪＭＵ）が手掛ける「砕氷船」の建造に注目が集まっている。現在、日本で砕氷船を建造できるのは今治造船が2025年6月26日に出資比率を60％に引き上げると発表した造船業界2位のジャパンマリンユナイテッド（JMU）だけである。
