Idemitsu Kosan has launched an ambitious upgrade of its crude oil shipping operations by introducing a sophisticated fleet allocation planning system. In partnership with ExaWizards, a company specialising in AI algorithms and software development, the Japanese energy giant has developed a new system that mathematically optimises the voyage planning of its international tanker fleet. The system was partially rolled out in April 2025 and is being introduced in stages. By embedding expert human insights into complex algorithmic logic, the company aims to reduce planning time by up to 40% and cut annual operating costs by several hundred million yen. Through its shipping subsidiary, Idemitsu Tanker, the group is also rapidly accelerating its decarbonisation initiatives.

In early 2025, Idemitsu signed a long-term charter contract with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines for an LNG-fuelled VLCC and committed to the construction of two next-generation VLCCs powered by methanol – the first of their kind in the company’s fleet. This move signals a significant development among Japan’s major oil refiners, who are seeking to improve transport efficiency and secure stable supply chains through digital transformation (DX).

This article explores the digital fleet optimisation system jointly developed with ExaWizards for Idemitsu’s international tanker operations. It also examines the current fleet managed by Idemitsu Tanker, the newly announced charter agreement with Mitsui O.S.K. 　出光興産が原油輸送における配船計画の高度化に乗り出した。AIアルゴリズムやソフトウェアの開発を手掛けるエクサウィザーズ（ExaWizards）と連携し、外航タンカーの運航計画を数理最適化する新システムを開発、2025年4月から段階的に運用を開始した。複雑な実務条件を踏まえて熟練者の知見をアルゴリズムに落とし込むことで、計画立案時間を最大４割削減し、年数億円規模のコスト圧縮を見込む。出光興産は海運子会社の出光タンカーを通じ、脱炭素化対応を急ピッチで進めている。

　2025年４月以降、商船三井とLNG燃料VLCCの長期用船契約を結んだほか、自社初となるメタノール燃料の次世代VLCC２隻の建造も決定している。石油元売り大手がDX（デジタル・トランスフォーメーション）によって輸送の効率化と安定供給の両立を図る動きとして注目される。
