“We will pursue offshore wind power, even if it means gritting our teeth” 洋上風力発電事業「歯を食いしばってでもやる」

Takeshi Hashimoto, President and CEO of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines（MOL）, has embarked on his fifth term at the helm. Japan’s shipping industry, once the backbone supporting its cargo-owning nation, has now entered a period of intense international competition.

Maritime Bridge Japan conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Hashimoto, who since taking office has driven forward a diverse range of investments, to discuss the management principles he believes will be essential for MOL to prevail in this global contest. (Part Two of the series)

Key points from the interview

→ Mr. Hashimoto emphasised that, for MOL to secure victory in international competition, “we must prioritise investment in sectors and regions where we hold strength, and concentrate people, assets and capital there. We will create an organisation that matches this strategy, and secure the human resources capable of carrying it forward.”

→ While companies in Japan and around the world tend to create “organisations for the sake of organisation,” Mr. Hashimoto declared, “such an approach will not enable survival in international competition.”

　商船三井の橋本剛社長CEOが今期で5期目の舵取りに入った。荷主国・日本を支えた日本の海運業は、今や本格的な国際競争の時代に入っている。Maritime Bridge Japanは今回、就任以来、多角的な投資を進めてきた橋本社長に、今後、商船三井が国際競争の中で勝ち抜くために必要な経営方針について単独インタビューした。（シリーズ２回）

このインタビュー記事のポイント

→橋本社長は、今後、商船三井が国際競争に勝つためには、「強い分野や地域への投資を最上位に置き、そこにヒト、モノ、カネを集中する戦略を取る。戦略に見合った組織を作り、組織を担える人財を揃える」と話す。

→日本のみならず世界中の企業が「組織のための組織」を作りがちだが、橋本社長は「国際競争で生き抜くにはそれでは勝てない」と言い切る。
