■Purpose of launching the campaign

On February 28, 2026, the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf effectively entered a state of combat following the sudden start of a joint operation by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Across the international community, political developments are being reported on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, vessels forced to remain waiting near the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf as of March 1, 2026 include more than 100 container ships, 450 oil and gas tankers, and 200 bulk carriers. Among them are 44 ships connected to Japan, and four of those vessels have 24 Japanese seafarers on board.

The Japan-related vessels include LNG carriers, crude oil tankers, car carriers, and bulk carriers owned by major shipping companies and Japanese shipowners.

Maritime Bridge Japan is the first news media outlet in Japan in which Japanese journalists report the latest international shipping, shipbuilding and other maritime-related news linking Japan and the world, publishing in both English and Japanese.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus after 2000 forced many international seafarers to remain on board for more than 12 months, continuing their service without relief, something that remains fresh in memory.

Since then, as a maritime specialist journalist, I have participated in ship visits at Yokohama and Daikoku Pier together with Andrew Dangerfield, chaplain of the international seafarers’ support organisation Mission to Seafarers (MTS) Yokohama, and have also taken part in Sea Sunday events held in July.

What seafarers isolated on board need most is accurate and reliable information from outside. Rather than fragmented information circulating externally, learning accurate maritime information as part of international reporting can provide significant support to international seafarers forced to remain waiting on board in the Persian Gulf, something I strongly realised as a maritime journalist during the coronavirus period.

Maritime Bridge Japan will provide free subscription registration to international seafarers who wish to receive a URL enabling them to read the full text of the newsletter, which reports 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on maritime industry developments connecting Japan and the world and the world with Japan, as well as to ship management companies and shipping companies deploying those seafarers.

■キャンペーン開始の趣旨

2026年2月28日、突如として開始された米国とイスラエルの共同作戦によるイラン侵攻により、ホルムズ海峡、ペルシャ湾は事実上の戦闘状態となりました。

　国際社会では日々、政治的な動静が報道されています。

　一方でホルムズ海峡、ペルシャ湾付近で待機を余儀なくされている船舶は2026年3月1日時点で100隻以上のコンテナ船、450隻の石油・ガスタンカー、200隻のバルクキャリアが滞在しており、日本関係船も44隻、そのうち4隻には日本人船員24人が乗船しています。

　日本関係船には、海運大手や日本の船主が保有するLNG船、原油タンカー、自動車船、ばら積み貨物船などが含まれています。

　Maritime Bridge Japanは日本人の記者が日本と世界の最新の国際海運、造船、その他海事関連ニュースを英語と日本語で発信する日本初のニュースメディアです。

　2000年以降の新型コロナウイルスの発生で、多くの国際船員の方々が12カ月以上の船内待機、継続乗船を強いられたことは記憶に新しいところです。

　船内で孤立している船員さんに最も必要なのは外部からの的確かつ正確な情報です。外部で発生している断片的な情報ではなく、国際報道として正確な海事情報を知ることは、ペルシャ湾で船内待機を余儀なくされている国際船員の方々の大きな支えになることは、新型コロナウイルスの当時に海事専門記者として痛感したことでした。
