Mid-December 2025. The setting sun seen from the office window cast a light that felt distinctly wintry.

A regional shipowner, identified here as A, let out a sigh.

This year, he returned the attendance reply for the local shipowners’ association’s year-end gathering with the box marked “absent”.

There were several reasons why A chose to reply that he would not attend.

One of them was a sense of unease at being grouped together as part of a single collective known as “shipowners”.

「共同保有は是か非か」

　2025年12月中旬。事務所から望む夕日は冬らしい光を放っていた。

　地方船主A（仮名）はため息をついた。

　今年は地元の船主会の忘年会の出欠連絡の案内に「欠席」のマークを付けて返信したのだった。

　Aが欠席で返信した理由はいくつかある。

一つは「船主」という一つの共同体として括られることへの違和感だった。
