(4): Why Japan’s Shipowners Are Turning to China

第4回「そして日本船主は中国に向かう」

On January 6, from noon, a New Year’s reception jointly hosted by the Japan Shipowners’ Association and the Japan Shipbuilding Industry Association was being held on the second floor of the Shipping Building in Hirakawacho, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.

More than 300 people connected to the industry packed the venue, and amid the crush, to the point where it was hard to move, New Year’s greetings were exchanged on all sides.

A shipowner who had travelled up from a regional area spoke with a wry smile.

“With all the talk about a one-trillion-yen shipbuilding support fund, there are more politicians attending this year’s reception as well. When Mr Nagasawa, chairman of the Japan Shipowners’ Association, and Mr Higaki, chairman of the Japan Shipbuilding Industry Association, are both present, it is only natural that everyone pays close attention to what they have to say.”

　1月6日、東京千代田区平河町の海運ビル2階で午後0時から、日本船主協会と日本造船工業会による新年賀詞交換会が開催されていた。

　会場には300人を超える関係者が詰めかけ、身動きが取れないほどの混雑の中で、新年の挨拶が交わされていた。

　地方から上京してきた船主が苦笑しながら話す。

　「造船支援基金1兆円の話題もあって、今年の賀詞交歓会には政治家の先生の出席も多い。日本船主協会の長澤会長、日本造船工業会の檜垣会長がそろって出席するとなれば、皆さん、その発言に注目が集まるのは当たり前ですからね」
