Western Bulk, a Norwegian dry bulk operator that has made an asset-light strategy—eschewing vessel ownership in favour of operating primarily under period charter arrangements—the cornerstone of its business model, is set to re-enter ship ownership together with Norwegian investment partners.

Key points of this article

→ The company currently operates around 110 vessels, ranging from Handysize to Kamsarmax. The vessels it operates are sourced through period charter contracts with shipowners.

→ This acquisition of a shared ownership stake marks Western Bulk’s first return to ship ownership in around nine years since its corporate split in 2016. The vessel acquired is the eco-design Kamsarmax bulk carrier MV CSSC Shi Jia Zhuang (Hong Kong-flagged, 81,601 deadweight tonnes, built in 2020 at CSSC Shi Jia Zhuang in China). 　ノルウェーのドライバルク・オペレーターでアセット・ライト（資産として船舶を保有せず、定期用船での運航を主体とするビジネスモデル）を事業戦略の柱とするウエスタン・バルク（Western Bulk）が、ノルウェーの投資パートナーとともに船舶保有事業へ再参入する。

今回の記事のポイント

→現在、同社はハンディサイズからカムサールマックスまで約110隻を運航する。一方、運航船については船主起用の定期用船契約から調達している。

→今回の共有持ち分取得は、ウエスタン・バルクにとって2016年の会社分割以降、約9年ぶりとなる。取得したのは2020年建造のエコデザイン・カムサールマックス型バルクキャリア「MV CSSC Shi Jia Zhuang」（香港船籍、2020年に中国のCSSC SHI JIA ZHUANGで建造された8万1601重量トン）で、同社は22％を保有し、自社管理でオペレーションを行う見通しだ。
