China’s Vehicle Exports Regain Momentum, Highlighting the Presence of the 342-Vessel Fleets Operated by Japan’s Three Major Shipping Groups
The PCTC market is showing renewed strength.
The newly built 7,000-car PCTC Lake Rotorua was reportedly fixed in May to China’s SAIC Anji Logistics on a six-month charter at a daily rate of USD 90,000. The development could also provide a tailwind for Japan’s three major shipping groups – NYK, MOL and K Line.
At the same time, when Japan’s finished vehicle exports, including CKD shipments, exceeded 6 million units between 2004 and 2007, substantial costs were incurred to secure container ship capacity to compensate for a shortage of PCTCs.
As a result, some industry participants caution that “a buoyant market does not necessarily translate directly into higher profits for shipping companies” (major shipping company).
