Japan, the US and South Korea are making arrangements to conclude a memorandum of understanding (MOU) centred on maritime co-operation in the Arctic and the expansion of energy supplies, according to multiple sources familiar with Japan-US relations as of September 20.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun are expected to meet in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and sign the MOU on Arctic co-operation.

A senior executive at a major Japanese shipping company told Maritime Bridge Japan by telephone on the afternoon of September 20: “If a framework for Japan-US-South Korea co-operation on Arctic shipping routes is established, we would like to take a positive view of it as a new business opportunity for Japanese shipping companies, including in energy transport.”
