US President Donald Trump has withdrawn, just one day after announcing it, his proposal to impose a 20% charge on cargo transiting the Strait of Hormuz. For Japan’s shipping industry, the immediate threat of an additional financial burden has, for the time being, been averted.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Japanese Shipowners’ Association are calling for the removal of mines believed to remain in the previous traffic separation scheme and for the restoration of a free and safe Strait of Hormuz without transit charges.
