More than 30 ships a day transit Strait of Hormuz via US-supported route

INTERTANKO reports tankers account for around 90% as Middle East crude oil shipments recover

Use of the southern route through the Strait of Hormuz, where the United States is supporting vessel transits, is increasing. The International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO) reported on 23 October that more than 30 merchant vessels a day on average were transiting the route, with tankers accounting for around 90%. Crude oil shipments from the Middle East are also showing signs of recovery, with maritime traffic continuing to be dominated by tankers.

Attacks on merchant vessels, however, are continuing, and traffic across the strait as a whole has yet to return to normal. For Japan, which is heavily dependent on Middle Eastern crude oil, the entry and departure of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and the continuity of shipments remain critical.

→ Middle East crude oil exports recover to pre-war levels, while shipments through the strait remain at around 80%

→ US-supported route underpins crude oil shipments, sustaining merchant shipping traffic amid continuing tensions in the strait

→ Japanese shipowners monitor VLCC movements as 38 crude oil tankers are recorded entering the Gulf

→ As attacks on vessels continue in the Strait of Hormuz, can the recovery in tanker traffic be sustained?
