ClassNK wind propulsion seminar draws Japan’s big three shipping lines 日本海事協会の風力推進セミナー、海運大手3社が参加し議論

Operators report energy-saving performance and operational challenges, with standardisation of performance assessment in focus

実船での省エネ効果や運用課題を報告、性能評価の標準化が焦点

Classification society ClassNK held an environmental seminar entitled “Latest Developments and Practical Operations of Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems” at the headquarters of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) on 23 October.

Japan’s three major shipping companies, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE), MOL and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), participated, reporting on energy-saving performance and challenges encountered in the operation of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) aboard vessels, while discussing the standardisation of performance assessment, economic viability and safe operations.

■ The full article covers the following topics (approximately 3,500 Japanese characters)

→ K Line, MOL and NYK come together to discuss progress and challenges in bringing wind-assisted propulsion into practical use

→ K Line advances development and testing of its large Seawing kite system, alongside rotor sails already installed on three vessels

→ MOL outlines plans to expand its wind-assisted propulsion fleet from the current four vessels to 80 by 2035

→ NYK assesses energy-saving performance using actual vessel data, examining the influence of wind conditions, routes and how crews operate the equipment

→ Who benefits from fuel savings? Cost-sharing between shipowners and charterers, and standardisation of performance assessment, come into focus
