Interview: Riken Keiki seeks to make ammonia leaks visibleインタビュー:理研計器、アンモニア漏えいを「見える化」

From point detection to area-wide monitoring, keeping seafarers out of danger with commercialisation targeted for 2028
「点」のガス検知から「面」の監視へ 船員を危険区域に近づけず、2028年実用化目指す
Riken Keiki Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer of gas detection equipment, is developing a Gas Leak Visualisation System that uses cameras to identify ammonia leak sources and show how the gas disperses, in anticipation of the wider adoption of ammonia-fuelled ships.
The system is being developed jointly with Soilook Co., Ltd., a start-up based in Kagawa Prefecture, with commercialisation targeted for 2028.
Maritime Bridge Japan spoke to Hiroyuki Sato, Deputy Manager of the Development Sales Section, Sales Promotion Department, and Terumasa Hori, Manager of the Development Sales Section, Sales Promotion Department, at Riken Keiki, about the objectives behind the technology and its potential deployment in the marine market.
■What you can read in the full article (approximately 4,000 Japanese characters)
→ How new camera technology could visualise ammonia leaks without requiring seafarers to enter hazardous areas.
→ From conventional point detection to area-wide monitoring, identifying leak sources and tracking the direction of gas dispersion.
→ Combining infrared imaging and AI, with ammonia leak detection confirmed at approximately 30 metres and commercialisation targeted for 2028.
→ Designed for installation in multiple locations aboard ships, with a target weight of approximately 5kg, a compact design and explosion-proof construction.
→ Looking towards the Chinese and South Korean shipbuilding markets, as international regulations and certification frameworks hold the key to commercialisation.
