Japanese Shipowners Reportage No. 45 第45回ルポルタージュ日本船主

Trading houses and leasing firms shift towards ship investment

商社・リース、船舶投資に舵切り

On 12 October, Japan was observing a public holiday, but international shipping continued to operate.

A dry bulk sale and purchase (S&P) executive from a European operator, visiting Japan from Singapore, chose a hotel lobby near central Tokyo as the venue for our meeting.

The English spoken by Danes is generally easy to understand. The executive spoke quietly in English.

”With newbuilding prices remaining high, many Japanese shipowners have stopped placing orders. Some are looking for secondhand vessels more than 10 years old as depreciable assets, while trading houses and leasing companies are acquiring partial ownership interests in vessels operated by Greek and other European operators. What do you think of the moves being made by Japanese trading houses and leasing companies?”
