Reportage: Japanese Shipowners, Part 48

“Counterparty Risk: When Charterers Become a Threat”
On the chilly, drizzly afternoon of 2 November, I met a foreign shipowner at a café near Shimbashi Station in Tokyo. He had attended an international maritime conference held the previous week.
The shipowner began to speak.
“Greek shipowners tend to hold back on investment when vessel prices and freight markets are high. Instead, they secure high charter rates under multi-year time charter contracts with Japanese or European operators. That way, even if the market collapses, reliable operators will continue paying the agreed charter hire.”
“Yet some Greek shipowners are continuing to order newbuildings at historically high prices. As a maritime journalist based in Japan, what do you make of this ‘change’ among Greek shipowners?”
For a moment, I hesitated, unsure how to respond.
