Iridium targets deeper foothold in Japan’s maritime market, betting on integrated GMDSS and resilient PNT as the next industry standard

イリジウム、日本海事市場で存在感拡大へ　統合GMDSSと代替PNTで「次の標準」狙う

Iridium is stepping up efforts to expand its presence in Japan’s maritime sector, positioning the country as a key growth market. Having already established a foothold through services for foreign-flagged vessels and a network of local partners, the company is now preparing for a broader rollout to Japan-flagged ships, advancing steadily through the approval processes of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

We spoke with Wouter Deknopper, Vice-President and General Manager of Iridium’s Maritime Line of Business, about the company’s strategy and future development in the Japanese market. (Interviewer: Hirofumi Yamamoto)

統合GMDSSと代替PNTで「次の標準」狙う

　衛星通信大手のIridiumは、日本の海事市場におけるプレゼンス拡大に向けた取り組みを強化している。すでに外国船籍船向けサービスや国内パートナー網を通じて一定の基盤を築いてきたが、今後は日本船籍船への本格展開を視野に入れ、国土交通省の承認プロセスを着実に進めている。日本市場を中長期的な成長の中核と位置付ける。
