Cable-laying ships: new investment for Japan’s majors?

Crew experience matters alongside vessel ownership and construction / Government official sees scope for shipping companies to play a role
As demand for higher-capacity subsea cables grows amid the expanding use of generative AI and data centres, securing cable-laying vessels capable of installing subsea telecommunications cables and repairing them when damaged is becoming increasingly important. In Japan, the existing fleet is also ageing, raising the question of how the country can maintain its cable-laying and maintenance capabilities over the longer term.
A government official interviewed by Maritime Bridge Japan (MBJ), speaking in a personal capacity, said: “Alongside the ownership and construction of cable-laying vessels, the experience accumulated by crew members – including where and what types of cables they have laid – is also important when repairs and modifications are required.”

Maritime Bridge Japan(MBJ)
