The 36th Reportage: Japanese Shipowners

Why a European operator is looking to “partner with Japanese shipowners”
On 13 August, at a hotel lounge in Tokyo. A European shipping executive visiting Japan arrived at the restaurant on the hotel’s second floor about an hour after the agreed lunchtime meeting.
”I realised just how important it is to have someone who knows Japanese culture and the shipping market well to guide us. I did not even know that 13-16 August is Japan’s ‘Obon’ period, when people honour their ancestors, and that many people in the Japanese shipping industry take holidays around this time,” said the European operator representative.
But Japanese culture and the workings of the country’s shipping companies were not the only areas unfamiliar to the European operator. There were also aspects of the “structure” of Japanese ship finance, centred on regional banks, that the operator had yet to fully understand.
