Qatari LNG transits rise, but supply normalisation remains distant

Alternative STS shipments conducted outside the strait as force majeure remains in place

LNG carriers loaded with Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been transiting the Strait of Hormuz in increasing numbers and heading towards Asian markets. According to LNG shipping sources interviewed by Maritime Bridge Japan, Qatar is also using older LNG carriers to move Qatari LNG out of the Strait of Hormuz before transferring the cargoes to other LNG carriers outside the strait through STS (Ship-to-Ship) operations as an alternative means of shipment.

■The full article covers the following points (approximately 2,000 Japanese characters)

→ LNG carriers have begun moving again. Why, then, does Qatar remain far from “supply normalisation”?

→ STS operations outside the Strait of Hormuz, yet insufficient capacity to move all contracted cargoes

→ Qatar continues to sublet LNG carriers under long-term charters to third parties

→ Operational constraints for Q-Max and Q-Flex vessels make securing TC-out employment difficult

→ Force majeure remains in place, highlighting the gap between “ships moving” and “contractual performance”
