J-ENG Accelerates Ammonia Engine Production with New Factory, Aiming to Revive ‘Technology Powerhouse Japan’ through Decarbonisation

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) will construct a new manufacturing plant on the grounds of its headquarters to establish a mass production system for ammonia-fuelled engines, which aim for zero CO₂ emissions. The project is valued at approximately 20 billion yen. While maintaining a product mix that includes conventional heavy fuel oil engines, the company will work to position decarbonised fuel engines as a core business in the 2030s, contributing to carbon neutrality by 2050. As Japan seeks to reclaim its status as a “technology powerhouse,” the move marks a full-scale shift by a domestic engine manufacturer towards the production of ammonia-fuelled engines.

This article details the process through which J-ENG came to consider building a new factory for the full-scale production of ammonia-fuelled engines, as well as the company’s journey in developing the technology.

　ジャパンエンジンコーポレーション（J-ENG）は、CO₂排出ゼロを目指すアンモニア燃料エンジンの量産体制構築に向けて、本社敷地内に新工場を建設する。事業規模は約200億円。重油エンジンと並行したプロダクトミックスを維持しつつ、2030年代には脱炭素燃料エンジンの主力化を進め、2050年カーボンニュートラルに貢献する。「技術立国ニッポン」復活に向け、日本のエンジンメーカーがアンモニア燃料エンジンの生産を本格化させる。
