First Achievement by a Japanese Shipping Company in Training Core Personnel for Ship Management, One Male and One Female

For Japan’s major shipping companies, seafarer development and ship management are core operations that underpin safe navigation, and strengthening these systems is directly linked to the sustainability of corporate management. On 15 October, MOL announced that two students from its maritime academy in the Philippines, the “MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy (MMMA),” have been selected for the “Ten Outstanding Maritime Students of the Philippines (TOMSP),” an award that recognises ten of the country’s top maritime students.

Key Points of This Article

→ This is the first such achievement by students of an educational institution privately operated locally by a Japanese shipping company, and the fact that one male and one female were selected is also symbolic.

→ In December 2024, MMMA became a “certified institution for marine engineers and officers” under Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, establishing a framework that enables the direct training of crew for Japanese-flagged vessels. Human resource development, which forms the foundation of ship management for Japan’s major shipping companies, is steadily delivering results.
