NYK conducted a major accident response drill on September 30, based on a scenario involving the grounding of a large bulk carrier and a fuel oil spill. Maritime Bridge Japan (MBJ) also took part in the mock press conference.

Tough questions covered not only the cause of the accident and the response to the oil spill, but also compensation for the fisheries and tourism sectors, shipowner liability, shipmanagement and the impact on iron ore transportation. The exercise closely recreated the pressures of a real casualty response, highlighting the weight of responsibility that Japanese shipping companies bear towards society.
