　Attacks on shipping by the US and Iran have escalated sharply around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on 9 September that it had targeted 20 vessels: two US ships, eight oil tankers and 10 vessels attempting to pass through a restricted navigation zone.

　US Central Command said it had struck and rendered inoperable five Iran-linked crude oil tankers. Based on the two sides’ announcements, 25 vessels were targeted in the largest exchange of attacks on shipping since the war began in February.

　A senior Japanese shipping executive told MBJ: “It may be difficult for the Strait of Hormuz to return to normal until at least the end of the fiscal year on 31 March 2027.” NYK, MOL and K Line assume in their full-year earnings forecasts that operating conditions in the strait will normalise from October, but the latest attacks may force them to reassess both the timing of normalisation and their earnings outlooks.
